Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board of Commissioners Elects President, Vice President and Chairman of Finance

The Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) voted yesterday to retain Terrence J. O’Brien as President of the Board. Also reelected were Kathleen Therese Meany as Vice President and Gloria Alitto Majewski as Chairman of the Committee on Finance.

President O’Brien said, “I am grateful to my colleagues on the Board for the confidence they have shown in me. I have always believed that it is in the best interest of the taxpayers when the Board works together as a team. We have accomplished a great deal in securing federal funds to complete our Deep Tunnel Project. We have lobbied our state lawmakers to give us authority for stormwater management in Cook County. We will work to maintain our triple-A bond rating while providing the best possible service to the citizens of Cook County at the lowest possible cost.”

President O’Brien was first elected to the Board of Commissioners in 1988. He has been president since 1997. Vice President Meany was first elected in 1990, and Commissioner Majewski has served on the Board since 1984.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago operates seven water reclamation plants in Cook County. The District collects and treats the wastewater from more than five million people and the industrial equivalent of another 4.5 million people each day. The District also operates the Deep Tunnel Project to collect and treat sewer overflows, and provides stormwater management for all of Cook County. The District’s 2007 budget is $1 billion.
