Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to Conduct Field Days

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is conducting two Field Days to demonstrate the advantages of farmland application of Class B biosolids.  These field days are open to the public.  District employees are planning on a large number of farmers to be in attendance.  The first event will be held on July 24, 2007 at a farm near the intersection of Peotone and Symerton Roads in Symerton, Illinois (Will County).  The second will be held on August 7, 2007 at a farm near the intersection of Route 1 and 5000 South in St. Anne, Illinois (Kankakee County).  The Field Days will be from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Those attending these informative events will have the opportunity to do the following:

  • Meet Orion Samuelson, a leading farm broadcaster heard regularly on WGN-AM.
  • Learn what biosolids are and how they are processed.
  • Learn the agronomic, economic, and environmental benefits of fertilizing crops with biosolids.
  • See firsthand how land application of biosolids is managed.
  • Become familiar with the regulations and management practices that apply to land application of biosolids to ensure environmental and public health safety.
  • Meet scientists and professionals from the District and the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Natural Resources Conservation Service to ask questions about farmland application of biosolids.
  • Meet farmers who fertilize their corn and soybean with biosolids.
  • Receive free literature about biosolids.
  • Enjoy a free lunch!
