Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Receives NACWA Awards

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) recently received three Platinum Peak Performance Awards from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA).  The District’s Lemont, Stickney, and Calumet Water Reclamation Plants won the awards for 100% compliance for 10, 10 and 15 consecutive years respectively of perfect compliance with permit limits.  The District’s Egan, Hanover Park, Kirie and North Side Water Reclamation Plants received Gold Awards.  This places the District among an elite group of honorees.

NACWA’s Peak Performance Awards recognize member agency facilities for outstanding compliance of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit. This is the formal name of the operating permit issued by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to monitor discharges from water reclamation plants.

The recognition program has three categories: Platinum, Gold, and Silver.  Platinum Awards are the highest acknowledgment.  A member agency may receive a Platinum Award for continuing years, providing that 100% compliance is maintained.  Should 100% compliance not be maintained, the member agency facility must receive four consecutive Gold Awards to be eligible again for another Platinum Award.

The honors were presented at NACWA’s Summer Conference, in Cleveland, Ohio.  Commissioner Debra Shore, General Superintendent Richard Lanyon and Assistant Chief Engineer Antonio Quintanilla personally accepted the awards on behalf of the Water Reclamation District.
