Resource Recovery and Chemical Toilet Waste
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) operates two liquid waste programs to protect the environment and public health. The Technical Services group under the Monitoring and Research Department is responsible for all activities related to these programs.
If you are interested in bringing either high strength organic material or chemical toilet waste to MWRD's facilities, please contact us for more information.
Resource Recovery
The MWRD considers wastewater as a renewable resource to be recovered and reused beneficially. Through its Resource Recovery Program, the MWRD is accepting high strength organic material to recover excess phosphorus from its wastewater during the water reclamation process to reduce its release into the waterways.
The program is administered through the MWRD's Resource Recovery Ordinance. For more information, please visit the Resource Recovery Program webpage.
Chemical Toilet Waste
The MWRD administers a Chemical Toilet Waste Program to promote and protect the public health and welfare by providing a site for the disposal of chemical toilet waste at its Stickney Water Reclamation Plant.
The program is administered through MWRD's Chemical Toilet Waste Ordinance. For more information, please visit the Chemical Toilet Waste Program webpage.
