Over the years, the responsibilities
of the Metropolitan Reclamation District have expanded along with the
increased awareness of the importance of clean water and environmental
protection. Today a staff of 2,300 men and women work under the direction
of nine elected commissioners. The District is funded primarily through
property taxes and user fees. Hospitals, universities and other institutions
also pay their fair share of the user fees, easing the burden on individual
property owners.
The District remains
today a separate government agency — neither a part of the City of
Chicago nor Cook County government.
