O’Brien WRP disinfection facility named in honor of former MWRD President Mariyana T. Spyropoulos

A trailblazer in water stewardship, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) former Commissioner, Chairman of Finance and President Mariyana T. Spyropoulos championed transformative initiatives, including the implementation of disinfection at the O’Brien WRP—an effort that significantly improved the health of the Chicago River system.
Her leadership strengthened the MWRD’s mission to protect public health and preserve natural resources for future generations. For her 15 years of work on the Board, the disinfection facility at the O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) in Skokie was dedicated in her name during a ceremony that took place on April 25 at the O’Brien WRP, located at 3500 Howard Street. Commissioner Spyropoulos played a pivotal role in advancing water quality initiatives, including spearheading the implementation of disinfection at the O’Brien WRP. Her leadership was instrumental in improving the health of the Chicago River system and reinforcing MWRD’s commitment to protecting public health and the environment.
“The dedication of this facility is a fitting tribute to Commissioner Spyropoulos’ unwavering advocacy for cleaner waterways and her efforts to ensure the highest standards of water treatment for our region,” said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. “Her vision and commitment have had a lasting impact on our communities and the environment.”
The Board announced its plan to rename the facility in honor of Commissioner Spyropoulos' many years of dedicated service at its meeting on Nov. 21, 2024. During her service, she championed fiscal responsibility, transparency and an environmentally progressive policy. She was instrumental in supporting the introduction of an inspector general, broadcasting Board meetings, developing an app for reporting water pollution, and adding the disinfection process to the treatment process. The disinfection facility at O’Brien WRP utilizes UV rays to neutralize or kill pathogens during tertiary treatment to protect boaters and other recreational users who come in contact with water on Chicago area waterways.
“I am deeply honored by this recognition and grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to improving our waterways," said Commissioner Spyropoulos. "Ensuring clean and healthy water for our communities has always been a priority, and I am proud of the work we have accomplished together."
First appointed in 2009, Commissioner Spyropoulos was elected in 2010, 2016, and 2022 and served both as chairman of finance from 2013 to 2015 and president of the Board of Commissioners from 2015 to 2019. Commissioner Spyropoulos stepped down from the MWRD in November 2024, following her election as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
“The legacy of Commissioner Spyropoulos is evident in the continued improvement of water quality in our region,” said MWRD Vice President Patricia Theresa Flynn. “This facility stands as a testament to her dedication to public health and environmental protection.”
