Water Reuse
The MWRD improves and returns clean water to the environment, meeting all water quality standards regulated by our National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) discharge permit. This water becomes available to downstream communities for reuse in many forms. We use this same treated effluent at our water reclamation plants each day for pipeline flushing, motor cooling, equipment cleaning, tank maintenance and landscaping. In addition, we convey reclaimed water to local park districts by our Kirie and Egan water reclamation plants for use in irrigation. When used appropriately, recycled water can satisfy many water demands and promote water conservation.
The MWRD’s water reuse presents financial savings, and at the same time promotes water conservation. In 2025, the MWRD reused more than 12 million gallons of water each day, reducing the need to purchase potable water from Lake Michigan to accomplish these tasks. The MWRD has also distributed over 160,000 rain barrels throughout Cook County to promote water conservation, water reuse and stormwater management.
The MWRD is currently researching new opportunities to convey its clean water to area industries and serving an integral role on the Illinois Section of the WateReuse Association to advance the safe, sustainable use of recycled water across Illinois through education, advocacy, collaboration, and innovation. The MWRD works diligently to ensure that no drop of this precious resource is wasted.
In July 2025, the MWRD Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution calling for the advancement of water reuse in a practical, cost-effective, and phased-in manner. To explore these future options, the MWRD established a Water Reuse Team to identify and evaluate potential non-potable reuse customers who could use treated water for applications such as irrigation, cooling, or other processes that do not require potable water. If a viable pilot reuse study is identified, the MWRD will seek approval to enter into appropriate agreements and pursue external funding and potential cost-sharing partnerships.
